The Evening Wind-Down

Start Your Wind-Down Ritual9:47 pm. The house is finally quiet. Your legs are not.
The dishwasher is running. The phone is charging. You have been on your feet, in the car, at the desk, holding everything together since 6 am. And now, in the one hour that belongs to you, your calves feel tight and your legs still want to go somewhere.
Most people scroll through it. Some stretch and hope. A lot of people have tried magnesium sprays and quit them, because a mist that stings and soaks the sheets is not a ritual, it is a chore.
Here is the thing nobody told you: the wind-down is a skill. It has steps. And the right tools make the steps easy enough that you actually do them every night.
Built by a neurologist who needed it himself
Dr. Doug Strobel is a board-certified neurologist and an adventure athlete. Long days in clinic, longer days on the trail. He built this balm in Indiana because he wanted one thing that did double duty: real magnesium chloride for the evening routine, in a base clean enough that he would put it on his own family.
Eight ingredients. Small batches. The same stick he keeps on his own nightstand.
"Oral magnesium must pass through the gut and liver. Only a fraction gets to the exact spot that worked hardest. Applied to skin, magnesium can be absorbed into the tissues underneath, right where you need it."
Dr. Doug Strobel, MD
The ritual is the method. Here is how to do it right.
Step 1. A little goes a long way.
Twist up the stick and swipe one light pass, about five inches, along each calf or the arch of each foot. That is enough. Do not cake it on. The balm is concentrated on purpose.
Step 2. The massage is where the magic happens.
Work it in for about one minute per leg, firm and slow, ankles up. The warmth of your hands softens the balm, and the massage is part of how the magnesium gets where it is going. This is the step people skip, and it is the step that matters most.
Step 3. Make it the signal.
Same time, same spot, every night. Lamp low, phone away, balm on, massage, lights out. Within a week or two the routine itself becomes the cue that the day is over.
Optional upgrade: trade your hands for the Body Gua Sha. The smooth Bian stone edge glides over the balm and lets you work calves and feet with long, even strokes. It turns two minutes of routine into something closer to a treatment.
The magnesium aisle is confusing on purpose. Here is the 60-second version.
Magnesium comes in many forms, and each one has a job. Knowing which is which is most of the battle.
- Magnesium chloride. The topical form. This is the one that absorbs through skin, and it is the one in our balm.
- Magnesium glycinate. A gentle oral form people take in capsules. Great in a supplement, not designed for skin.
- Magnesium citrate. An oral form for general repletion. At higher doses it is known for sending you to the bathroom.
- Magnesium oxide. The cheap one in bargain supplements. Poorly absorbed orally.
- Magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt). A bigger molecule, best enjoyed as a bath, not targeted application.
Does it really absorb through skin? Yes. Here is the science.
This is not folklore. In a 2017 human pilot study published in PLoS ONE, Kass and colleagues measured an 8.5 percent rise in serum magnesium after just two weeks of daily transdermal magnesium cream. Research from Grober and colleagues in Nutrients (2017) maps the route: magnesium enters through hair follicles and sweat glands. University of Queensland imaging work (2016) showed magnesium ions penetrating the outer skin layer, with roughly 40 percent of the pathway running through hair follicles.
That is also why the massage step is not decoration. Working the balm in puts the magnesium chloride in contact with more of those follicles for longer. Method matters.
If your magnesium spray stings, it is not you. It is the spray.
Magnesium sprays are magnesium chloride suspended in water. On dry, sensitive, or freshly shaved skin, that concentrated salt mist can prickle and itch. Then it drips down your ankle and dries on your sheets. So the bottle migrates to the back of the cabinet, and the routine dies.
We buffered the same mineral in organic olive oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter instead. The result:
- No sting. The oils carry the magnesium chloride onto skin gently.
- No drips. It is a solid stick. It goes where you put it and nowhere else.
- No greasy sheets. Massage it in and it absorbs. Peppermint and lavender essential oils leave a calm, quiet aroma, straight from the oils themselves, instead of a residue.
The best wind-down tool is the one you will actually reach for at 9:47 pm. That was the whole design brief.

Questions, answered straight
When is the best time to use Magnesium Balm?
Most of our customers use it in the evening, about 20 to 30 minutes before bed, as the anchor of a wind-down routine. Swipe it on calves, feet, or shoulders and massage it in for about a minute per side. It also works any time your muscles have put in a long day.
Will it sting or get my sheets greasy?
No sting. Magnesium sprays put magnesium chloride in a watery mist that can prickle on dry or freshly shaved skin. Our balm buffers the same mineral in organic olive oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter, so it goes on smooth and absorbs as you massage it in. A little goes a long way, so there is no greasy film left for your sheets.
Does magnesium really absorb through the skin?
Yes. Magnesium chloride is the form used for topical application. A 2017 human pilot study by Kass and colleagues in PLoS ONE measured an 8.5 percent rise in serum magnesium after two weeks of daily transdermal magnesium cream, and 2017 research by Grober and colleagues in Nutrients describes how magnesium enters through hair follicles and sweat glands. Massaging the balm in is part of the method, which is why we teach the ritual.
What is inside the balm?
Eight ingredients: magnesium chloride, organic olive oil, organic coconut oil, beeswax, shea butter, peppermint essential oil, lavender essential oil, and vitamin E. That is the whole label. No arnica in this one. Made in small batches in Indiana.
How long does one stick last?
Longer than you expect. A little goes a long way, and one short swipe per area is enough when you massage it in. Many customers get a month or more of nightly rituals from a single 2.5oz stick.
Do I need the Gua Sha tool?
No. Your hands and one minute of massage do the job. The Body Gua Sha is the upgrade for people who love the ritual. The smooth Bian stone edge helps you work the balm along calves and feet with even pressure, and it makes the evening routine feel like a treatment.
Tonight can go differently.
