What Is Magnesium Balm and How Does It Work for Sleep, Pain, and Stress?

By Dr. Doug Strobel, MD – Board-Certified Neurologist & Ultra-Endurance Athlete

Magnesium balm is a topical cream that helps the body absorb magnesium through the skin. As a neurologist and an ultra-endurance athlete, I created this balm out of necessity—to calm sore muscles, ease stress, and sleep better during intense race recovery. Today, many others are using it to do the same—naturally, and without side effects.

Why I Created Magnesium Balm

After completing a 50K race, my legs were locking up at night, and I was waking frequently. As a neurologist, I understood that magnesium was critical for calming nerves and muscles—but oral supplements didn’t work well for me. That’s when I developed a balm using magnesium chloride and organic oils to deliver the mineral through the skin instead. The result was fast, effective, and gentle. That formula became the base for Dr. Doug’s Magnesium Balm.

What’s In It?

Magnesium balm is a thick, skin-friendly blend of ingredients designed to deliver magnesium transdermally (through the skin). Our formula includes:

  • Magnesium chloride (highly absorbable)
  • Organic coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter and beeswax
  • Organic Lavender essential oil (for added calm) & Peppermint essential oil
  • Vitamin E

Each ingredient is food-grade, clean, and chosen for safety—something I care deeply about as a physician and father.

How Magnesium Balm Works

Here’s how your body responds when you apply magnesium balm:

  1. Magnesium enters through the skin – bypassing digestion, which improves absorption and avoids GI upset.
  2. Your muscles and nerves relax – magnesium calms nerve signaling and relieves cramping or tightness.
  3. Your brain slows down – magnesium supports GABA, a calming brain chemical needed for rest and sleep.
  4. You feel more balanced – physically and mentally, especially during stressful times or after activity.

How It Helps: Sleep, Pain, and Stress

For Sleep

Magnesium is well-known for supporting restful sleep. I recommend applying it to the bottom of your feet, calves, or lower back 30 minutes before bed. It helps with:

  • Falling asleep faster
  • Reducing nighttime leg cramps or twitching
  • Improving deep sleep cycles
“I rub Dr. Doug’s Magnesium Balm on my feet every night and fall asleep so much faster. It’s part of my bedtime routine now.” – Alice P.

For Muscle Pain & Recovery

From runners and athletes to growing kids, magnesium balm helps reduce soreness, tension, and spasms. It works well when applied directly to sore areas like the calves, thighs, or lower back.

  • Relieves tight muscles and knots
  • Supports faster recovery after workouts
  • Helpful for restless legs and growing pains

For Stress and Anxiety

As a neurologist, I often recommend magnesium to support the nervous system. When applied topically—especially with lavender—it can help:

  • Regulate mood and reduce anxious tension
  • Lower cortisol levels (stress hormone)
  • Support nervous system recovery after long days or sensory overload

Is It Safe?

For most people, yes. Magnesium balm is considered safe for:

  • Children (over 2 years)
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding moms
  • Sensitive skin types

That said, I always suggest checking ingredients, doing a patch test, and avoiding broken skin. If using on children under 2, ask your pediatrician.

One reason I created this balm was because I couldn’t find anything on the market that was clean and safe enough for my family—so I made it myself.

How to Use It

Where to apply:

  • Bottom of feet (for sleep and whole-body absorption)
  • Calves or thighs (for cramps, muscle pain)
  • Neck and shoulders (for stress or tension)
  • Belly or lower back (for calm, PMS, or GI tension)

When to use it:

  • Nighttime before bed
  • Post-workout for recovery
  • Anytime you feel sore, restless, or overwhelmed

How much? I usually recommend 2–3 teaspoons for full-body use, or a small scoop for targeted relief. Massage gently into the skin for at least 30 seconds.

Balm vs. Lotion vs. Oil

Type Texture Absorption Best Use
Balm Thick, creamy Medium-slow Deep massage, dry skin, overnight use
Lotion Light, spreadable Faster Daily body use
Oil Thin, runny Fast (can sting) Quick spot relief, sprays

I prefer balm because it doesn’t sting, lasts longer, and is easier to use without mess. That’s why I chose this format for our magnesium formula.

What to Look For in a Magnesium Balm

Not all magnesium balms are created equal. Choose one with:

✅ Magnesium chloride (better absorbed than sulfate)

✅ Organic oils (non-toxic and skin-safe)

✅ No synthetic fragrances

✅ Gentle essential oils like lavender

✅ Small-batch quality control

Dr. Doug’s Magnesium Balm was developed with all of this in mind—because I made it first for myself and my family.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a natural way to reduce stress, ease pain, or sleep better—magnesium balm may be exactly what your body needs. It works with your nervous system, supports muscle recovery, and helps restore balance.
