When one of our fallen soldiers came home recently, the Midland chapter of the Patriot Guard put out a call for flag bearers.  No one showed up to support that family.  Therefore, we have started our own chapter of the Patriot Guard which will cover Brewster, Presidio and Jeff Davis counties.  You do not have to be a veteran, you do not need to ride a motorcycle.  You do need to be able to support the family of one of our fallen soldiers.  If interested, please contact Richard Whitebear at (432) 371-2134 or Michael Heidebrecht at (432) 371-2136.  We have 50 flags that we can use at the funerals and would like to have enough persons to run out of flags. Hopefully we do not need to ever use them.  Please come join us in support of our fallen soldiers and their families.

This drive begins in the border town of Presidio, Texas, and heads east along FM 170, known as the River Road, as it parallels the Rio Grande River. Much of this drive passes through Big Bend Ranch State Park. Almost everything you see on the right side of the video is part of Mexico. The drive ends at Terlingua Ghost Town, just a few miles outside Big Bend National Park.
Join us for a video montage trip through Texas Big Bend National Park, where we hike, canoe, explore, see stars, and enjoy the camaraderie of the big Terlingua Chili Cookoff.
This is gospel. If you got down, and up, this last weekend in Terlingua, besides the dining halls, the music scene was something else. The Porch rocked at its peak Saturday afternoon, fiddlers from as far away as Oregon sitting in with locals on harmonica and fiddle. On Sunday morning, Michael Coombs (left) of northern New Mexico brought his guitar and accordian to the table at Ghostown Cafe for two hours of gospel, opening with a rousing "When the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there." This music has become a weekly happening at the cafe, beginning at 10 a.m. One patron showed up after losing her purse, and others chipped in for breakfast in the spirit of the day. Not meaning to be trite, one musician said of the weekend, "It doesn't get any better than this." (From the Alpine Daily Planet, Photo and report from Carlton Leatherwood)

Anyone who has spent any time at the porch in Terlingua, Texas over the past year has probably heard Moses playing guitar/harmonica by himself or with anyone who will play along. After many months of talking about it we were finally able to record Moses with many of his friends/musicians over 2 days.
Musicians accompanying Moses included James, Carol, Annie, Jim, Zak, Jovan, & Jeff…. I think I got ‘em all.  Here is a sample of what some of it sounded like, I hope you enjoy.

The prices did increase, slightly.  1,700 gallon tanks are now $801.00; 3,000 gallon tanks are now $1,400.00  Oddly, the most increase was on the smaller tanks, the 1,600 and 1,225 gallon. Call Jim or Carolyn for details or to arrange to make a deposit.  371-2506

Too hot to hike during the day; why not hike at night.  Friday, May 4, the Barton Warnock Visitor Center and Fort Leaton Historical site will be hosting our last full moon hike of the season at the HooDoos along the Rio Grande.

The HooDoos is a section of river where the rock formations have been eroded out by wind and water to form a Salvador Dalisque landscape.

Park rangers will meet at the Warnock Center’s parking lot and at Fort Leaton’s parking lot at 8:00 pm before driving 25 miles to the HooDoos on FM 170. It will be one day before the full moon so there will be plenty of moon light to hike by, but bring along a flashlight and wear hiking boots or a pair of sturdy shoes.

During the hike we will be observing the creatures of the night and talking about their nocturnal habits and maybe throw in a few ghost stories along the way. The hike and drive will last about two and a half hours; transportation is not provided. If it is overcast or raining the hike will be cancelled.

The cost is $5.00 per person. For more information call the Warnock Center @ (432)424-3327 or Fort Leaton @ (432) 229-3613

The “Day AFTER Mother’s Day” Storm brought back a lot of memories for those of us who experienced “THE Mother’s Day Storm” in 1983!  According to what this editor has been able to glean from scattered reports (before my phone went out!), this storm was, over all, less destructive, but that doesn’t mean ‘No Damage.’  Several roofs departed the premises, windows were shattered, trailers rolled, and water tanks went missing!  At least one building left its home property and went across the road!  The National Weather Service measured 70 mph winds! And the Hail was Hell!  “Denuded desert blooms in fourteen days, bringing life again renewed.”

Keep your eyes and ears open for neighbors who NEED HELP! Also, if you have neighbors who are presently absent, checking out their property might save them a lot of problems down the road.
