One of the candidates for the RGEC board is Jennifer Weaver . She lives in Ruidoso, TX, and is a school teacher in Presidio. She is a very smart woman, and is very interested in seeing that our interests are protected. One of her big concerns is that just a few years ago we had among of the lowest electric rates in the state, and now we have absolutely the highest rates in the state. She is a person who will listen to our complaints, investigate and take appropriate action where possible. She has already been in touch with the officials at the PUC and our legislators to see what can be done to protect us as consumers. You can use your paper ballot or vote online.

TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS!!! That's how much cash was raised this past weekend by the Terlingua Preservation Society for the benefit of Terlingua High School, Terlingua Fire & EMS, and Acti-Vets. That doesn't include the several tens of thousands of tourist dollars spent in the greater Terlingua community by visiting Carroll Shelby enthusiasts in this wonderland place he loved best. Congratulations and kudos to everyone who helped them make "T'12" a delightfully memorable safe event.

News From Beyond:

Museum of the Big Bend,Sul Ross U. in Alpine: Don’t miss out on the exhibit, Removing the Shroud of Mystery: Archaeology in the Big Bend, running until Jan 3, 2013. “Found across the vast region of the Big Bend region of Texas are clues left behind that help tell the story of the “First Texans.” Some of these sites can be traced back more than 10,000 years, and they tell us about people that had complex cultures that successfully adapted to changing environments, climates and food sources over their many centuries of occupation in the region.

Tourism & Economy: “A national recession impacts Americans’ travel to national parks, a new University of Georgia study has found….. Recent visitation statistics released by the U.S. Department of Interior already noted the significant decrease in national park visitation—dropping nearly 10 million since 1998 to 278 million visitors—but this is the first study to link the drop to a bad economy. The findings could help park managers plan ahead for revenue shortfall and a decrease in visitation, particularly as the economic forecast remains bleak….. Some researchers speculated that when money is tight, people would turn to national parks for cheaper recreation options. But that does not seem to be happening, or the substitution is perhaps limited to national parks of national and international reputation only.”
GSMmotoRent Winter Motorcycle Rental: GSMmotoRent, based in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, plans to offer a full range of dual-sport motorcycles for rental from January 3 - March 15. It’s that time of year again, when some new five-dollar bills come to town for us to circulate the rest of the year – or at least until spring.  You might need a score card to keep track of where and when all the fun things are happening. Cuidado El Dia de los DPS!

As always, the first weekend in November. . .
A BIG TERLINGUA WELCOME TO ALL YOU CHILI HEADS. Have a safe and fun time while you’re here. The best advice is to stay at the Cook-off site. Just because you’re not driving drunk doesn’t mean someone else isn’t.  And you surely noticed a lot of law enforcement on your way here.
As usual, there are 2 Cook Off. The Original One is behind the Terlingua Store – about 5 miles west from the 118 and 170 intersections; the other is at the CASI site – about 7 or so miles further west on 170. $30 per person for the weekend; $10 per person on Saturday.

El Dia de los Muertos is one of the most beautiful events of the year in our community.  During the daytime of Nov. 2nd, all are welcome to participate in a general clean-up of the Terlingua Ghost Town Cemetery. Large, tiered alters are standing in the cemetery; feel free to place your loved ones’ pictures, favorite food/drink, candles and flowers.
A little before sundown candles will be lit on all the graves and a bonfire will be started that will roar on into the night.  Community members and visitors contribute to what is always a huge pot-luck dinner for all to enjoy, and local musicians will get together to jam for us. It is a good idea to bring your own lawn chair and beverages. Oh, and bring a long lighter if you have one.

The annual Scholastic Book Fair is scheduled for the week of October 29 - November 2 at Big Bend Library.  Donation boxes have been placed around town to raise money to buy new books for the library.  Additionally, the students' book wishes will be on display in the library - come in, pick a name, and buy a book - it's that simple!

TRICKOR TREAT AT THE LIBRARY. The library will be open from 5 -7 on Halloween for family night at the book fair.  We'll have story telling, crafts, and treats for the kids while the parents shop. This is a great chance to do your holiday shopping while helping to buy new books for Big Bend Library.

We have received word of the death, on 15 October, of the retired Archdeacon of the Big Bend ministry, The Rev. Sandra S. Bess. "Mother Sandra", as she wished to be called, worked in the Big Bend/TransPecos area as a seminarian and later was Archdeacon from 1980-1983. She is still fondly remembed by many residents of the area.
Mother Sandra's successor was the Rev. Canon Melvin La Follette who served as Canon Missioner to the Big Bend from 1984 until his retirement in 1994. Father Mel will celebrate the Mass on All Saints' Sunday, 4 November, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Mary and St. Joseph, Lajitas.
The Holy Eucharist will be dedicated to all the faithful departed of the past year, including our beloved Bill Burt, and especially to Mother Sandra and her missionary work in building up Christ's Kingdom in the Big Bend.  The Episcopal Church welcomes you. Everybody is invited to attend. Services are held in the Chapel at 11:00 a.m. on the first and third Sundays of every month and as announced.
