The “Day AFTER Mother’s Day” Storm brought back a lot of memories for those of us who experienced “THE Mother’s Day Storm” in 1983!  According to what this editor has been able to glean from scattered reports (before my phone went out!), this storm was, over all, less destructive, but that doesn’t mean ‘No Damage.’  Several roofs departed the premises, windows were shattered, trailers rolled, and water tanks went missing!  At least one building left its home property and went across the road!  The National Weather Service measured 70 mph winds! And the Hail was Hell!  “Denuded desert blooms in fourteen days, bringing life again renewed.”

Keep your eyes and ears open for neighbors who NEED HELP! Also, if you have neighbors who are presently absent, checking out their property might save them a lot of problems down the road.

Recycling is closed for the summer.  Please take your recycling to the Park or to Alpine.  See you in the Fall.  Thanks for all the support.

One answer to moth demise involves an alcohol burning Lampe Berger - yes, French. Invented by a French pharmacist over a 100 yrs ago. There is a particular fragrance one can burn that is also a repellant. It's not your basic citronella stuff.  But you can make it up as a fragrance if you like it.  Get rid of ANY kind of unwanted odor in your house or car even dead shrimp in the 'fridge....no, I do not sell them. I did at one time.  Call Nancy @ 2616 for all you ever wanted to know about Lampes Berger and their air purifying/fragrance/repellant attributes.

SHOT TIME LIQUORS -
New items:  Lemonade and Raspberry Pucker vodka. Very refreshing in some tonic water or a nice cold glass of iced tea.  Like Captain Morgan?  Then, you'll love Captain Morgan Black; the other great summer drink.

Our friend "Cowboy" Doug Davis passed away on May 25. He came out to the Big Bend in the late 1980's with his dog Buck, working for Linda Walker and picking and grinning wherever he could find work as a musician.  Doug was a great entertainer--his rendition of old favorites like "Ruby", "Georgia on my Mind", the "Old Chisholm Trail" and my personal favorite "Riding down the Canyon", were crowd pleasers.

One night, he came into his Starlight gig with his clothes on backwards.  And not to forget Doug in loincloth and lei, drumming for the Terlingua Tahitian Dancers at Luau.  He was a writer, using an alter ego J.I. Slinger to make his point.  He moved on in the late 1990's and found a niche in the Fredericksburg/Luckenbach area, hosting the Picker's Circle.  "I tell you folks it's heaven, just riding down the trail, to watch the desert sun go down."

Ringo Smith of the Study Butte Store, passed away on Sunday, May 27th.  Ringo and his wife LaDonna took over the SB Store in the early 1990's, upgrading and enlarging the Store.  They held great July 4th celebrations and had many friends.  Ringo was the grandson of Big Bend pioneers John and Maria Daniels, who farmed the floodplain of the Rio Grande at the Daniels Ranch for many years.  LaDonna left us last year, and it devastated Ringo.  He was a good man.  His survivors include his grandchildren, Mariah and Trevor.  May he Rest In Peace in the arms of his dear wife.

A memorial service for Doug is being held June 3 in Luckenbach.  I'm sure there will be some really good pickin'.  Services for Ringo have not been announced.

Adios old Friends
