- FUNKY JUNK is coming
On March 2 at the Starlight Theatre, we'll be presenting our annual art show to celebrate: recycling, using what you got, innovation with rust, reclamation, degradation, imperfection, twisted metal, warped minds, and everything junky under the Sun!  If you're a Creative Creature, please consider making something for the show...any format will do:  paint, sculpt, draw, perform, film, music, photo, random, multimedia, food art, printmaking...ANYTHING related to the theme.  We'll be receiving art at the Starlight the whole day of Wed. 2/27  before the show.  If you simply have some amazing junk you'd like to donate for sculpture potential, please email Mark at raindogfalls@yahoo.com or call 3196."We put the FUNK in your JUNK!"

COLLIE'S COLORING BOOK
Production has begun. Limited copies are available as ordered. 1/2 of the book price of $20.95 is required to reserve your copy, and there is an additional $5 postage and handling fee. Each book is a collection of 17 original line-drawings of Mandalas ready for you to color.  The books are comb-bound and have a protective clear plastic outside cover over a front and back color page. You may call Collie at 371-2468 for the time being - or - Carolyn at 371-2506 to reserve your copy.

THE LAST AMERICAN HITCH HIKER
This is your very own intrepid journalist, reporting for duty.  You haven't seen me much lately, and for good reason.  I have had my nose to the grindstone, working on my newest version of the BIG book of hitch-hiking and finishing the 25 handcrafted illustrations for this epic adventure novel.

Now, I am ready to get 'er printed.  The fact of the matter is, if I wait until I have enough saved up, it will take two years for this to happen.  So, I'm doing a fundraising campaign, which is not to say that I'm looking for a handout.

For each level of donation that I recieve, the donor gets an appropriate reward.  For instance, for a fifty dollar donation, you'll get a copy of the book with a custom drawing by me in the front, two signed limited-edition prints of illustrations from the book, and your name will be on the Thank You page of the book.  I have all kinds of information about my new book and this form of fundraising.

Just go to www.kickstarter.com and type the word "hitch" in the search box to find my project.  Please check it out and make sure you watch the video...it's kinda crazy/goofy like yours truly!  If you'd rather just donate money directly to the printing of the book, email me at raindogfalls@yahoo.com  or call 371-3196.

I will personally give the same exact rewards for levels of donation which you'll see on the Kickstarter site. Without the kindness of others, NONE of this would be possible.  Thanks for giving me a lift!    Peace to you and yours, Mark Kneeskern

Boil Notice
Due to a line break and reduced pressure, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has required our water system, Study Butte Water Supply Corporation, to notify customers of the need to boil their water prior to consumption.

To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and making ice should be boiled and cooled prior to use. The water should be brought to a vigorous, rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes.  In lieu of boiling, you may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source.

When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, the water system officials will notify you that the water is safe for consumption.  Instructions to discontinue boiling will be issued in the same manner as this notice.

If you have questions concerning this matter, you may contact Archie Gill at 371-2223 or Jimmy Taylor at 371-2621 or (512) 577-5527. The SBWSC office number is 371-2933.

If you wish to contact the TCEQ, you may call (512) 239-469

The safer cities in America are just on the border with Mexico, according to a report by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).  The city of El Paso, Texas the neighbor of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, is the urban area of the country with a population of over half a million residents, which has the lowest crime rate as does Presidio, Texas, border town of Ojinaga,   San Diego, California, near Tijuana in Baja California, Mexico, is the second largest U.S. city with over 500,000 residents with lower levels of crime. Both San Diego and El Paso, respectively are as the two largest cities of the U.S. border with Mexico and also in that order, the two largest urban areas with dynamic cross-border links. In contrast, cities with higher crime rates are Detroit, Baltimore and Memphis. The FBI statistics used for analysis of all U.S. cities regardless of size or number of people.

Bike Fest Success - Over 400 mountain bikers smiled their way on the trail systems throughout Big Bend for the Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest. A majority of the happy, appreciative riders were from Texas and the nearby states, while other folks beat the cold of the north. Thanks to the cooperative efforts of Desert Sports and Texas Parks and Wildlife in organizing this festival to benefit the Big Bend Trails Alliance. A grand hand of gratitude to the sponsors and volunteers.

Lajitas Resort and Maverick Ranch RV Park extends a special Thank You to Desert Sports for choosing us as headquarters for this year’s Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest!  We enjoyed all of the participants and especially appreciate the extra effort from everyone to make this an awesome event.  We were sad when it was over, and  pleasantly surprised at how clean the park was after everyone left – excellent job!  We had a great time and are already looking forward to it again next year!  Your Friends, Tim and Debbie Garrison, Maverick Ranch RV Park.

The UMPTEENTH annual Cookie Chill Off will be held Sunday, March 3, at The Boathouse in Terlingua Ghost Town.  This event started “way back when” with river guides showing off their river baking skills.  It has now evolved to include guides, restaurant cooks, and our sweet-toothy neighbors.  Rules are simple: how would a guide bake while on a trip?  No electric, gas, or battery power in your preparations, but pre-made crusts, cookies, and cakes can be incorporated into your recipes. Recipes need to be attached to your entries.

There are four categories: Cookies/Candy, Ice Cream/Sorbet, Pie, and Sugar Free (the sugar free category can be any of the three above.)  Judges will pick the best in each category from each division and will award a Best of Show prize.  The People's Choice Award goes to the contestant who receives the most votes.  Registration for each entry is $5 and for those wanting to vote. $5 will get you a bowl, a spoon and a ballot! A Petanque tournament and a jam session are also in the works! This event is sponsored by Last Minute Low Budget Productions, a 501(C)(3) organization, with all proceeds going to the Mercury Performing Arts Center.
There is an AA meeting which meets at the Baptist Church (although not affiliated with the church in any way) on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.  There is also an Al-Anon meeting held on Mondays at 7:00.

The Legendary Legion Jam #3 will be taking place this month on Sun. Feb. 24th. We expect another great lineup of musicians, and another great time. This time around, we are raising money for the Terlingua School. There is also a pot-luck dinner at the American Legion that night, so if you can, bring a dish. The festivities begin at around 6:00 PM.

From Chris Miller: I have some friends who about a year ago built a nice cabin out on Javelina Run about a mile off of the ranch road.  While they were gone a big storm came thru and ripped the entire roof off and  the rest of the building then collapsed because there was nothing left to hold it together. They lost furniture, insulation, tools and a number of other items to the elements.

Sadly, that is not where their misfortune ended. Thieves came thru and took a bunch of stuff from the house including a nice mahogany door, big green outhouse building, air compressor, and some other building supplies (roofing, 4x4 posts, etc) tools and other things.

If anyone has any information that could assist in the recovery of these items, we would greatly appreciate it. The outhouse should be easily identifiable and could help lead us to the other items. Any and all help would be much appreciated. If you could also forward this to other groups you belong to we would appreciate that as well.

They understand that this could be a misunderstanding and maybe whoever took the items figured they weren't coming back since they hadn't been there in months. They are back though and these things would help restore their little getaway to a usable condition.  No questions asked - if someone took the items it would be great if they could just return them to the site so they can rebuild.

Thanks in advance for any and all help. You can contact me with any questions at 432-371-3335 or 602-578-1202.

"The Last American Hitch Hiker >>> Tales of Wander" is an Epic Travel Story about one person who discovers a wealth of patience, hundreds of fascinating folks, and a renewal of faith in the beauty of humanity. The book contains accumulated experiences of over 15,000 miles of uncommon motation. Poetic irony that I'm "sticking my thumb out" to try and get funding for the printing of my book too.  If you give me the lift I need, you'll be rewarded with customized copies of the book, signed limited-editon prints of the exceptional illustrations, and more... plus your name gets on the Thank You pages.  Just go to Kickstarter.com and search projects using the word "Hitch".  Your kindness will get me to my destination.  Thank you.  Peace, Mark Kneeskern  (if you'd rather deal directly with me, that works too...email raindogfalls@yahoo.com or call 371-3196)
