It has been almost eleven years since the closure of the border.

The Green Scene Thanks To all the volunteers, musicians, vendors and an overwhelmingly supportive community, THANK YOU for your help with this year's very successful Green Scene event. We raised about $3,000, double that of last year. A new rain tank is in the works for the Garden, which of course means MORE FOOD next year! Thank you again.

The Brewster County Commissioners Court adopted a 90-day burn ban at their meeting on Tuesday, March 26.  The use of cooking stoves fueled by “white gasoline” or enclosed outdoor cooking grills or pits fueled by propane, natural gas, or wood will be permitted during the burn ban. Commercial businesses/vendors may also use fire for outdoor cooking or heating in order to operate the busines.
The fire must be screened and in a pit or fire ring. Welding is allowed by commercial/professional welders under the following guidelines only:
1. A spotter is required for each welder, each cutter, each grinder, and for any activity that causes or may cause a spark.
2. A diameter around the welding area shall be cleared of vegetation.
3. Welders must have enough fire suppressants on hand to suppress any fire that may be started from their use of welding equipment.
4. Welding in an enclosed area is acceptable.
5. No welding is permitted if “red flag” warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service.
During previous burn bans, welders had been required to obtain a permit from their County Commissioners. A permit is NOT necessary at this time.
Persons violating this order may be arrested and fined up to $500.

Since we don’t know who is calling the shots, or how, or why, and dates are rescinded for a thousand obscure reasons, we must be patient.  The border is opening, slowly. Just know that Ernesto, Mike Davidson, the old Far Flung Adventures, the National Park Service, the Mexican Government, the Protected Area of the Sierra del Carmen, the Department of Homeland Security and especially the people of Boquillas are problem solving, jumping through hoops, forging themselves in fire and coming up with creative solutions for a project that is entirely new. Nothing like this has ever been accomplished before. Protocols and regulations and procedures need to be established, checked and double checked….in triplicate. We need to be grateful, amazed and patient. Consider grabbing your wallet and your passport in the very near future and getting your feet wet as you visit your neighbors in Boquillas del Carmen….sometime after Wednesday.  This is too cool to expect a fairy wand to make it happen all in one day.  When the border is truly open, the angels will sing, and the decree will split the cyber waves of the Internet.  Keep tuned to The Moon for details..

Mexico has agreed to release more water into the Rio Grande for use by agriculture and other interests on the Texas side of the river, according to the international commission that arbitrates water-rights disputes between the two neighbors.
In a letter to South Texas congressman, the International Boundary and Water Commission says the Mexican government acceded during the past week to commission requests for more water from Rio Grande tributaries in Mexico.
This past week, in response to the commission's request "to increase deliveries from Mexican tributaries, the Mexican government initiated releases from a reservoir on the San Rodrigo River," U.S. Commissioner Edward Drusina said in a letter dated Friday.
Once the water reaches the Rio Grande, in accordance with a 1944 treaty between the United States and Mexico, one-third of the volume will be allotted to the United States

POP draws from contemporary culture, advertising, comic book and illustrative technique, and there is irony and parody in it."

The project “Voices from Both Sides” is about opening the border and reuniting the ‘greater’ Big Bend community.  Jeff Haislip met with the Presidente (Mayor) in San Carlos, Chihuahua, to discuss stories of his life since the closing & they decided to throw an International Music/BBQ in Paso Lajitas & Lajitas on May 11, 2013. We will be making a chain of people holding hands all the way across the river, to symbolize the connection we still cherish with our wonderful neighbors. The project is intended to let the artists who live here speak through their songs, poetry, and stories, explaining what has gone on since the closing of these remote border crossings.  See you there!

Quote from a mywesttexas.com article about Terlingua: "You won’t find anyone here who doesn’t want to be here. People don’t move here for a job. People move here and they work to stay. They come to start a new life, to escape, to go unrecognized. Nobody accidentally ends up in Terlingua. "

Calling all local Terlingua musicians and friends: There is a new website where a list of current Terlingua musicians is being compiled.  Please go to the website and then add the name of any musician that is missing from the list that currently lives in Terlingua sometime during the year, still performs in Terlingua and/or has a CD for sale in Terlingua.  You can do so in the comment box.  Musicians, you are encouraged to include your phone number if your services are for hire.  Please help spread the word. Thank you.

Thank you all who helped unload the recycling trailer (Steve Harper and Judy, Mindy, Nancy Faubian, Kevin Sexton, Sue and Joe), also thanks to the Park for continuously giving us the opportunity to take it to their facility.  This last time there was a lot of small paper board (tooth paste, cereal, cracker boxes),  when we pulled out the cardboard we had small boxes every where (no fun individually picking up); so please put them in a larger flattened box or paper sack that will fit in the slot for cardboard.  The trailer is once again open for recycling until it gets full, after that you will need to take your recycling to Alpine.  Please, no styrofoam, empty propane cans or glass!  Thank you for sorting your recycling; that saves us a great deal of time!  And if you would like to volunteer (it really is kinda fun), please email Sue (rifephotography@gmail.com).
Last Minute Low Budget’s next production is the Commedia Robin Hood, with lots of family-friendly fun and audience participation. There will be two public performances on Thursday May 9, at 7 pm on the La Kiva patio and at 9 pm at the Starlight, before performances the next day at the Terlingua and San Vicente schools. There is no admission for the public shows, but we will be passing the hat – please support our efforts to bring live theater to our school children.

This project, called "Voices From Both Sides" is to let the artists who live here speak through their songs, poetry, and stories, explaining what has gone on since the closing of these remote border crossings.
My friend Collie Ryan has been an ambassador to the people of Paso Lajitas and San Carlos for over 25 years. Paso Lajitas is near a flat spot in the river where people have crossed back and forth for hundreds of years... San Carlos is sixteen miles further into Mexico on a rough and rocky road. With the guidance of Collie and other friends, I have been traveling to Mexico to record some of the local musicians and storytellers. Conjunto Furia Nortenia & Victor sang for me in Boquillas Canyon, an amazing place on the Rio Grande, for the project. While I was recording the beautiful voices echoing across that great chasm, all of a sudden it hit me that the people I was meeting in Mexico are unquestionably connected to the people on the US side, through families, friends, history, and culture... spanning even the most senseless divides forced onto our communities.
I met with the Presidente (Mayor) in San Carlos, Chihuahua to discuss stories of his life since the closing & we decided to throw an International Music/BBQ in Paso Lajitas & Lajitas on May 11, 2013. We will be making a chain of people holding hands all the way across the river, to symbolize the connection we still cherish with our wonderful neighbors. This relationship has been challenged by the insensitivity of people who have no idea what it's really like here, but we know better, and wish to show the rest of the world that neighboring countries can live and work together in harmony. A video will be made as part of the project, and this International Event will be included in the film.
I expect the CD to be produced in October. A Kickstarter to raise money for promotion, production, recording, and film making costs will be launched very soon.Thank you for your support,
Jeff Haislip - See you there!
